From Irish Folklore to a Beloved Halloween Tradition
Vargas Property Services is pleased to join the Town of Superior’s Gardeners Unite group in celebrating the creativity, community, and seasonal traditions that connect us to our gardens. With Halloween approaching, here’s a brief look at the story behind one of fall’s most familiar sights: the jack-o’-lantern.
Jack-o’-lanterns come from Irish folklore about “Stingy Jack,” a trickster who fooled the devil. According to legend, Jack was barred from both heaven and hell and wandered the earth carrying a glowing coal inside a hollowed-out turnip.
In Ireland and Scotland, people carved frightening faces into turnips and other root vegetables to ward off wandering spirits. The custom became associated with Halloween, which has roots in the Gaelic festival Samhain.
Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the tradition to North America, where pumpkins were plentiful, larger, and easier to carve. By the late 1800s, pumpkin jack-o’-lanterns had become a familiar Halloween decoration.

Celebrating the Traditions That Bring Communities Together
At Vargas Property Services, we believe the traditions that bring people together are just as important as the outdoor spaces where communities gather. We’re proud to celebrate the season alongside the Town of Superior’s Gardeners Unite group and the residents who make this community special. Whether it’s sharing gardening knowledge, enjoying seasonal festivities, or caring for the landscapes around us, these moments remind us that strong communities grow through connection, creativity, and a shared appreciation for the places we call home.
